TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - FC Barcelona have just sealed the La Liga title. Alongside the club’s triumph, however, fans were also quick to focus on Lamine Yamal.
During Barcelona’s championship parade on Monday, May 11, the teenage star was seen waving a Palestine flag while riding atop an open-top bus through the city streets. With tens of thousands of supporters reportedly gathered, Lamine Yamal’s gesture was soon captured and spread rapidly across social media, gaining widespread praise online.
The moment was not only shared by fans. The 18-year-old footballer also posted it on his own Instagram account, where he included the moment in a carousel alongside snapshots from Barcelona’s title celebrations.
According to Al Jazeera, Barcelona has long been a major center for pro-Palestinian activism in Spain. The city has hosted regular demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians and has also served as a departure point for aid flotillas attempting to challenge the blockade on Gaza.
The parade came after FC Barcelona clinched their 29th La Liga title with a 2-0 victory over arch-rival Real Madrid CF on Sunday. The result marked only the second time in history that an El Clasico clash directly determined the Spanish league champion.
