TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto said his administration has significantly increased judges' remuneration, claiming that salaries for junior judges are now among the highest in the ASEAN region.
“Now, especially, the income of our junior judges is above the average for judges in ASEAN,” Prabowo said during the Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and Joint Session of the MPR, House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Prabowo also said he had received a report from Supreme Court Chief Justice Sunarto that the Indonesian chief justice now earns more than the chief justice of Singapore.
Higher Pay to Strengthen Judiciary
Prabowo said the increase in judicial remuneration was part of efforts to strengthen Indonesia's judiciary.
He described judges and the courts as the last line of defense for people seeking to protect their rights and obtain justice.
Prabowo said the rule of law and access to justice should not be limited to people with greater financial or political power, but should be available to people across society.
“Even the most vulnerable people must be able to obtain justice in our courts,” said Prabowo, a former commander of the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus).
Salary Increases Planned Since 2025
The salary increases had been planned by Prabowo since last year. During the 2025 Annual MPR Session, he said judges' salaries could be increased by around 300 percent from previous levels.
“We have increased [salaries] for some judges by as much as 280 percent. We are also not hesitant to uncover major corruption cases,” Prabowo said on January 15, 2025.
At the time, Prabowo said improving judicial pay was part of his administration's efforts to strengthen law enforcement and access to justice.
“One important thing in upholding the law and justice is that judges' salaries must be adequate,” said Prabowo, who also chairs the Gerindra Party.
