5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bengkulu, BMKG Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 struck Lebong Regency, Bengkulu, on Saturday (March 7) at 11:58 PM WIB.

According to the official BMKG website, monitored in Jakarta, the epicenter was located on land, 64 km west of Lebong.

The earthquake's coordinates were 2.99 degrees South Latitude (S) and 101.63 degrees East Longitude (E), at a depth of 47 km.

The BMKG urged the public to be cautious of possible aftershocks.

Recently, Indonesia had faced several earthquakes in a row in the month of February. On February 21st, 2026, the BMKG recorded a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in Tangerang Regency, Banten, on Saturday evening, at 7:23 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time), precisely three kilometers southeast of the regency center, at a depth of 160 kilometers. The epicenter was on land, so there was no tsunami potential.

On February 22nd, 2026, a tectonic earthquake measuring 5.0 magnitude struck the north coast of the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 10:35:41 PM WIB. Tremors were felt in several areas in West Sumatra, but no significant damage was reported.

On February 24th, 2026, the BMKG reported a 3.2-magnitude tectonic earthquake that shook parts of Bogor Regency and Sukabumi on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 10:08 AM WIB. The quake's epicenter was located at coordinates 6.75 degrees south latitude and 106.57 degrees east longitude. The earthquake was classified as shallow, occurring at a depth of 6 kilometers due to active fault activity.
