BMKG Forecasts Rain, Thunderstorms Across Indonesia Today

2 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast moderate rainfall in several Indonesian cities on Monday, March 9, 2026.

Moderate rain is expected in Jakarta, Bengkulu, Bandung, Semarang, and Tanjung Selor. Meanwhile, thunderstorms are predicted in Bandar Lampung and Banjarmasin.

According to BMKG forecaster Diahayu R, speaking via the agency’s Instagram account on Sunday, March 8, light rain may also occur in Medan, Padang, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Serang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Pontianak, Samarinda, and Palangkaraya. Thick and overcast clouds are forecast in Banda Aceh, Tanjung Pinang, Pekanbaru, and Jambi.

Weather Conditions in Eastern Indonesia

In eastern Indonesia, thunderstorms are forecast in Merauke, while moderate rain is expected in Kupang, Mamuju, and Makassar. Light rain is also likely in Denpasar, Mataram, Kendari, Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Ambon, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Jayawijaya.

Tropical Cyclone Seeds

Diahayu also reported the presence of tropical cyclone seed 93S in the Indian Ocean south of Lampung as of Sunday, March 8, 2026. The system has wind speeds of around 30 knots and air pressure of 999 hectopascals, moving southwest. However, the probability of it developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours remains relatively low.

Over the next 48–72 hours, the system is expected to weaken, with wind speeds decreasing to around 25 knots and air pressure rising to about 1000 hectopascals while continuing to move southwest.

According to Diahayu, the system has triggered strong winds in the lower atmosphere over the southern Indian Ocean near Lampung. These winds create convergence and wind bending that may support the formation of rain clouds.

Another System Near Papua

Another tropical cyclone seed, 95W, was observed in the northern Pacific Ocean near Papua with wind speeds of about 15 knots and air pressure of 1006 hectopascals, moving northwest.

The likelihood of this system developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours is also low. Over the next 48–72 hours, it is expected to weaken and gradually dissipate.

This system has also generated strong winds and wind convergence in the northern Pacific Ocean near Papua, extending to northern West Papua and around Halmahera.

Potential for Heavy Rain

In addition, a cyclonic circulation was detected in waters west of Aceh and in the Sulawesi Sea. These systems create wind convergence zones stretching from waters west of Aceh to the Aceh region and across the Sulawesi Sea, conditions that may enhance the growth of rain clouds.

Due to the combination of these atmospheric factors, significant weather potential may occur in several regions of Indonesia. BMKG warned of possible heavy to very heavy rainfall in Bengkulu, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Java, and East Nusa Tenggara.
