TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ensures that Indonesia continues to engage in dialogue with Iranian authorities to ensure the safety of two Pertamina oil tankers detained in the Strait of Hormuz due to the tension between Iran and the United States-Israel.

According to the Director General of Asia Pacific and Africa at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Santo Darmosumarto, the ongoing tense and non-conducive situation in the region demands increased coordination and communication efforts with the local government.

"Regarding the Pertamina tankers, this is being followed up by our colleagues at the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran because the dialogue must be conducted with the Iranian government," Santo said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Friday, as quoted by Antara.

He said that diplomatic and coordination efforts are ongoing with various stakeholders in Iran to ensure the safety of Pertamina vessels amid the conflict.

Director General Santo also ensured that these measures are aimed at ensuring that the Pertamina oil tankers eventually "safely navigate the Strait of Hormuz."

Considering the importance of the Middle Eastern countries as trading partners for Indonesia, he affirmed that the region's conflict dynamics could have significant domestic impacts.

Therefore, in addition to improving coordination to protect Indonesian nationals in the area, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is intensifying communication with relevant parties to assess and address the potential impacts of the Middle East conflict on Indonesia.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia mentioned that the government is negotiating the release of two PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) oil tankers that remain in the Strait of Hormuz.

"There are two cargoes trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, owned by Pertamina. Currently, the vessels are anchored for a safer location, while we are negotiating," Bahlil said after an iftar event at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Jakarta on Wednesday night.

Bahlil conveyed that the two oil tankers trapped in the Strait of Hormuz do not disrupt Indonesia's energy security, as Indonesia is quickly seeking alternative energy sources in the United States.

Pertamina has also ensured the safety of the crew amidst the ongoing conflict between the U.S.-Israel and Iran in the Middle East region.
