TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) will hold a meeting to determine the date (isbat) for 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijriah, or Eid al-Fitr 2026, on March 19, 2026, coinciding with the 29th of Ramadan 1447 H. The meeting will take place at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs Office, Jakarta, starting at 4:00 PM Western Indonesian Time.
The Director General of Islamic Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Abu Rokhmad, stated that preparations for the isbat meeting for 1 Shawwal 1447 H have been carried out in accordance with applicable procedures, covering both substantive and technical aspects. "The meeting will be held based on verified hisab data and rukyat results, and through a mechanism that is open to the public," he said in an official statement from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Monday, March 2, 2026.
The isbat meeting will involve various parties. Some of the attendees included astronomy experts from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), planetariums, observatories, representatives of Islamic community organizations, and other relevant agencies.
"Because it involves broad representation, the decision of the isbat session has strong religious legitimacy," he said.
The Director of Islamic Religious Affairs and Sharia Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Arsad Hidayat, stated that technical preparations are continuing to be refined, including coordinating the monitoring of rukyatul hilal (crescent sighting) at various points in Indonesia. He urged the public to wait for the official government announcement after the entire series of sessions are complete.
The isbat session will begin with a seminar on the position of the crescent moon, followed by verification of rukyatul hilal reports from various regions. The isbat session will then conclude with the official announcement of the determination of 1 Shawwal 1447 AH by the Minister of Religious Affairs.
