TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some people involved in the Gerakan Nurani Bangsa are urging Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to promptly form an independent investigation team to look into the recent protest unrest at the end of last August.
Amnesty International Indonesia member, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, stated that the protest carried out by students and activists was initially peaceful but turned violent with the burning of public facilities and loss of lives.
Therefore, members of Gerakan Nurani Bangsa—including academics, professors, democracy activists, and religious leaders—are requesting that Prabowo form an independent investigation team to avoid false accusations and rumors.
"We propose not only a team but an independent commission," Lukman said after a three-hour meeting with the President at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
Lukman emphasized that the independent commission should be comprised of individuals with integrity, professionalism, independence, and strong authority to carry out its functions and duties.
A group of figures from Gerakan Nurani Bangsa met with President Prabowo for four hours. Apart from Lukman, those present included Franz Magnis Suseno, Laode Syarif, Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas, Komaruddin Hidayat, Francisia Saveria Sika Ery Seda, M. Quraish Shihab, Omi Komariah, and Gomar Gultom.
Previously, Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Law, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, mentioned that the government does not need to form an independent investigation team to look into the protests that led to the deaths of several individuals.
According to Yusril, the perpetrators have been detained and interrogated by law enforcement. He also assured that the police had already arrested those involved in the August demonstrations.
Yusril stated that forming a joint fact-finding team (TGPF) takes time because people must be assembled and given time to gather facts. However, he said that the facts were already clear and that the legal process was underway.
