TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tugboat has been reported to have sunk in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday night, March 5, 2026. In the incident, three crew members, who are Indonesian nationals, have been reported missing. This event occurred amid military tension in the Gulf region due to the war between Iran and the United States, as well as Israel.
The Indonesian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Judha Nugraha, said that the tugboat named Mussafah 2 sank around 18:30 local time. "There were a total of seven crew members, four of whom are Indonesian nationals. Three crew members have been found safe, including one Indonesian national. Four others are still missing, three of whom are Indonesian nationals," said Judha when contacted by Tempo on Friday night, March 6, 2026.
According to Judha, out of the four missing crew members, three are Indonesian nationals. Meanwhile, another Indonesian national has been found safe along with two crew members of other nationalities. Local authorities are still conducting search operations for the victims who have not been found.
Judha stated that the tugboat sank in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz, near the border of the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The Indonesian government, through the Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, continues to monitor the progress of the search operation conducted by local authorities.
"We have coordinated with the company and are currently coordinating with local authorities for the search process," said Judha.
Additionally, the Indonesian Embassy is gathering complete data of the crew members involved in the incident. This data is needed to confirm the identities of the victims and to provide information to the families of the affected Indonesian nationals.
"We are also requesting complete data from the crew members in order to provide updated information to the families," said Judha.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic shipping route that connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. The region is often a point of geopolitical tension, especially when conflicts between Middle Eastern countries escalate. In the past few days, the security situation in the region has intensified following the escalation of the conflict between Iran and the United States as well as Israel.
