TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three US service members were killed and several others injured as part of the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, the US Central Command said in a statement on Sunday.
Several others sustained "minor shrapnel injuries and concussions — and are in the process of being returned to duty," the statement reads.
The US military officials did not provide details on how and when the troops lost their lives or sustained injuries.
It's the first time US casualties have been announced since the US and Israel launched a major attack against Iran on Saturday, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior Iranian military figures.
"Major combat operations continue and our response effort is ongoing," the Central Command statement said. "The situation is fluid, so out of respect for the families, we will withhold additional information, including the identities of our fallen warriors, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified."
US President Donald Trump had warned on Saturday that there could be US casualties in the conflict, saying "that often happens in war."
Iran targets US military in the Gulf
Tehran has responded to the US-Israeli strikes by launching missiles at Israel and US military facilities across the Middle East.
On Sunday, Iran said it had attacked the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier with four ballistic missiles, state media reported. But US Central Command said the ship "was not hit" and that Iran's missiles "didn't even come close."
Trump, meanwhile, said on social media the US military had destroyed nine ships in the Iranian navy and was "going after the rest."
The US operation against Iran, officially named "Epic Fury," has so far claimed the lives of at least 200 people in Iran, according to the Red Crescent.
In Israel, rescue services said nine people had been killed and 28 wounded in an Iranian strike on the central town of Beit Shemesh, bringing the country's death toll to 11. More are missing.
The United Arab Emirates said three people had been killed in Iranian attacks there, while Kuwait reported one dead.
