TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned fishermen and other stakeholders to be aware of the potential for high waves in several waters off North Sumatra, which could reach four meters due to strong winds.

BMKG Class II Maritime Meteorology Station Belawan forecaster Christen Ordain Novena in Medan said on Friday that waves as high as 2.5 to 4 meters are likely to occur in the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands, the waters west of the Nias Islands, and the waters west of the Batu Islands.

Additionally, he said that waves 1.25 to 2.5 meters are likely to occur in the waters around the Batu Islands, west of North Sumatra, and east of the Nias Islands. "These conditions have the potential to occur from 8 a.m. to 10 August 2026," said Christen, as quoted by ANTARA.

Warm sea surface temperatures west of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean also have the potential to increase evaporation and thereby increase the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere.

These conditions can contribute to the formation of rain clouds in northern Sumatra. Wind patterns in the waters of northern Sumatra generally move from the southeast to the west, with wind speeds ranging from 4 to 30 knots.

BMKG issued a warning to fishermen using boats to be alert if wind speeds reach 15 knots and wave heights reach 1.25 meters, and barges if wind speeds reach 16 knots and wave heights reach 1.5 meters. Similarly, ferries must also be alert when wind speeds reach 21 knots and wave heights reach 2.5 meters.
