Floods Sweep Bali, Denpasar Yet to Declare Disaster Status

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Denpasar city government in Bali is still focusing on evacuating residents affected by the floods that hit the city on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. They have not yet declared a disaster status due to the widespread flooding.

Denpasar Mayor IGN Jaya Negara said the government is still focused on evacuating residents who are trapped in their homes or swept away by the river currents. "Of course, we cannot determine the disaster status at the moment because, since 4 AM, along with the vice mayor, we have not determined it yet. We are currently focusing on rescue and evacuation as a priority," he said in Denpasar on Wednesday.

Jaya Negara noted that as of noon, at least three people had been declared dead, two were missing, and many had been evacuated to shelters such as community halls. "We will certainly discuss the emergency disaster status because it is the basis for allocating emergency disaster funds to assist the victims," he said.

Heavy rains over the past two days have caused flooding in several residential areas of Denpasar, Bali. According to the city administration, there are at least seven worst flood points, namely in the Badung Market area and the confluence of the Tukad Badung River, Kertalangu, Padangsambian Kaja, Pura Demak, Sidakarya, Panjer, and Pemogan in the Taman Pancing area.

Jaya Negara said that the high-intensity rainfall over 24 hours had caused the headwaters of the Tukad Badung River to be unable to contain the volume. He even mentioned that this was the first time in his life that he had seen such a condition occur in the Bali Provincial Capital.

"By 2 in the morning, the water level was already high, and now RS Wangaya (hospital) is in an urgent condition; the power is out, and the generator cannot be used. Now we are renting because the overflow of the Tukad Badung River has caused the water to reach Pura Demak; all of its sources are from the Tukad Badung," he said.

In addition to evacuating victims in flood-affected areas where the water level reached the roofs of residents' homes, the Denpasar city administration has also begun to record the victims and the damage, including the collapse of two fabric stores on Sulawesi Street due to the strong flow of the Tukad Badung River.

"We will allocate disaster funds for the losses of traders, not only here but also in Padangsambian, where houses and walls have collapsed, and many cars have been damaged. We are currently asking village chiefs to record the losses, and we will compensate for the damages," Jaya Negara said.

Previously, Major General Piek Budyakto, Commander of the Udayana Military Regional Command, had instructed the deployment of personnel from the 1611th District Military Command (Kodim) of Badung to evacuate flood-affected residents. They deployed Landing Craft Rubber Boats.

Commander of Kodim Colonel I Putu Tangkas Wiratawan led his troops to evacuate residents of Denpasar who were trapped in the floods and to secure various belongings of the people.

"For the time being, we are focusing our personnel in the Kumbasari Market area, Gajah Mada Street, Denpasar, considering the significant impact. We hope the flood will recede soon so that the activities of the people can return to normal," said I Putu Tangkas Wiratawan.
