TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ensured the safety of all Indonesian citizens in Nepal following the recent large-scale protests in the country.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela stated that the ministry has taken quick steps by coordinating with the Nepalese authorities through the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which is accredited to Nepal.

"As a swift measure, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, has coordinated with local authorities to ensure the safety of 134 Indonesian citizens in Nepal," Nabyl said via video message in Jakarta on Friday, September 12, 2025.

Advisories and Emergency Hotline

Nabyl explained that the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka has directly communicated with Indonesian citizens residing in or visiting Nepal, including tourists and participants in international meetings in Kathmandu.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka has contacted Indonesian citizens in Nepal to ensure their safety," he said. The embassy has also issued advisories for Indonesian citizens to avoid protest sites and to increase vigilance.

The Foreign Ministry ensures that the Indonesian citizen protection team, along with the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, will remain in Nepal to monitor the situation on the ground and assist in the repatriation of other Indonesian citizens. "To provide further protection, the embassy also provides a 24-hour hotline for them," Nabyl added.

Furthermore, coordination has been carried out with local authorities to assist Indonesian citizens having difficulties accessing the airport due to road closures. This step was taken to ensure their safe return to Indonesia.

Gradual Repatriation

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, based on data from the Indonesian Citizen Protection Team in Kathmandu, there are 78 Indonesian citizens in Nepal during the ongoing political crisis. Most citizens live in Kathmandu, while the rest are scattered throughout Pokhara and Lumbini.

Several Indonesian citizens began to be repatriated on Thursday, September 11, 2025. Eighteen individuals departed from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu en route to Jakarta. They are scheduled to arrive at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Friday, September 12, 2025.

The group consists of people from different institutions, including a delegation from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Health, GIZ Indonesia, the Hydro Association, and academics from the University of Indonesia. Several tourists are also present.

Most of them were in Nepal to participate in the 3rd Exchange of the Renewable Energy Mini-Grids in South-South and Triangular Cooperation (ENTRI) event, which took place in Kathmandu from September 8 to 12, 2025.
