TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani said the floods that struck Bali recently serve as a test for the government capacity in protecting its people. The disaster, she said, must not be interpreted solely as a natural disaster.
"This disaster is a reminder that the state must be present in a tangible way," said Puan in her written statement on Friday, September 12, 2025.
She urged the government to ensure promptly that the essential needs for affected residents are fulfilled, and subsequently implement post-disaster recovery programs.
She emphasized the necessity for a swift distribution of ready-to-eat meals, clean water, medicines, and clothing, including special necessities for babies, children, and the elderly. She also underscored the need to provide suitable and safe shelters for the flood-stricken population, and provide temporary educational access for children whose schools have been affected by the Bali flood.
"Don't let the residents wait around for the aid. The local and central governments must take concrete measures and be present on the ground," she added.
Puan maintained that Bali, as the face of Indonesia's tourism, must swiftly recover. The parliament, she said, strives to oversee the recovery process to ensure its transparency.
The recovery must be comprehensive, not only focusing on repairing damaged infrastructure but also ensuring that the citizens, merchants, and farmers receive financial support to prevent further deterioration.
