TEMPO.CO Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to deliver his first-ever speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, on September 23, 2025. He is slated to speak third, after Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Tri Tharyat, the Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained that Indonesia cwas supposed to be the first speaker during the session, based on the draw. But the order follows the UNGA tradition since its establishment, with Brazil first and the U.S. as the second speaker.
Will Speak on Palestine and Qatar
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that Prabowo will address a number of global issues during his speech. "The global dynamics, including the recent attack on the sovereign state of Qatar, will be addressed. The issue of Palestine will undoubtedly be raised," said Tri during a media briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Jakarta on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
In addition to the issues in the Middle East, Prabowo will bring forth the Asta Cita vision related to foreign policy, adding that the president will stress the importance of a more significant role for global south countries.
However, according to Tri, Prabowo's priority discussions cannot be fully disclosed before the official presentation. "We will wait for the launch, but we will raise prominent issues," he said.
Indonesia's Multilateralism Commitment
The Indonesian Ambassador to the UN, Umar Hadi, mentioned on the same occasion that Prabowo's presence in New York reaffirms Indonesia's commitment to multilateralism. "It is necessary to provide updates to other UN member states regarding our progress and future priorities," said Umar.
He emphasized that Indonesia has been active in environmental issues, human rights, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Palestine, and UN reform.
"I think that's why this year we plan for the Indonesian delegation to be led directly by the President," he said.
Prabowo is allocated 15 minutes in accordance with the assembly's rules. His presence marks the return of the Indonesian President to the UN forum after a decade.
During President Joko Widodo's administration, the forum was more frequently represented by Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Jokowi himself was noted to have attended the UN General Assembly session in 2020 and 2021 virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
