Iran Defends Military Strikes as Legitimate Self-Defense

7 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said his country's military action was a legitimate form of self-defense against ongoing military aggression by the United States and Israel.

In his post on the social media platform X on Monday night, Baqaei responded to a statement by a United Nations spokesperson who expressed concern over Iran's attacks on U.S. military bases in the region and ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

"This is not a ‘military confrontation.’ It is the continuation of a blatant and unprovoked act of aggression initiated on February 28 by the United States and Israel," he wrote, as quoted by ANTARA.

Baqaei stressed that Iran did not initiate hostilities and acted in accordance with international law.

"Iran does not ‘attack.’ Iran’s strikes on U.S. military bases and assets stationed in the southern Persian Gulf constitute a legitimate and lawful exercise of its inherent right to self-defense under international law," he said.

He also stated that countries in the region that host U.S. military assets share responsibility for escalation if their territory is used to launch attacks against Iran.

Baqaei reiterated his irresponsibility for criticizing Iran for defending itself while those committing serious violations of international law are not held accountable.
