TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto extended his condolences for the passing of the former Qatari Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Sheikh Hamad passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
Prabowo conveyed his condolences through an Instagram story on social media. "Indonesia extends its deepest condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani, and the people of Qatar, for the passing of His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," said Prabowo via the @presidenrepublikindonesia account, on Monday, July 13, 2026.
Sheikh Hamad passed away at the age of 74 on the previous Sunday. He was a member of the royal family who served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013.
During his reign, Qatar ratified its first permanent constitution in 2004. His government also introduced municipal-level elections, in which women could vote and run as candidates.
Sheikh Hamad abdicated in 2013, handing over the position of Qatari Emir to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was 33 years old at the time. Tamim has been serving as the Emir until now.
Sheikh Hamad was born in 1952 into the Al Thani family, which has ruled Qatar since the mid-19th century. Hamad studied at the British military academy, Sandhurst, and became the commander of the Qatari army and the defense minister before becoming the emir.
In the late 1970s, Sheikh Hamad was designated as the crown prince to succeed his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. In 1995, Sheikh Hamad executed a bloodless coup to seize the throne of Qatar while his father was abroad.
Under Sheikh Hamad, Qatar transformed from a small, marginal state with no money into a significant power in its region. During Sheikh Hamad's reign, Qatar became one of the world's richest countries based on its per capita gross domestic product (GDP), in part due to its abundant natural gas reserves.
