TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The French national team opened their 2026 World Cup Group I campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on Tuesday local time.
France's victory came thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe (2) and Bradley Barcola, while Senegal reduced the deficit through Ibrahim Mbaye, according to FIFA records.
This victory puts France in first place in the 2026 World Cup Group I standings with three points from one match.
The defeat leaves Senegal bottom of the 2026 World Cup Group I standings with no points from one match.
Senegal created the first chance of the match through Nicolas Jackson's shot, which hit the French goal.
As the first half drew to a close, Senegal created another chance, this time through Ismaila Sarr, but his shot sailed well over the crossbar.
Entering the second half, France tried to be more incisive and had a chance through a Michael Olise shot, which was blocked by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Kylian Mbappé also threatened the Senegalese goal, but Mendy made another save to deny the goal.
France's efforts finally paid off in the 66th minute when Mbappé's powerful shot found the back of the net, making it 1-0.
Senegal responded and equalized through Nicolas Jackson, but the goal was ruled offside.
France doubled their lead to 2-0 after Adrien Rabiot's cross was met by Bradley Barcola in the 82nd minute.
Entering stoppage time, Senegal had a chance to reduce the deficit through Ibrahim Mbaye's shot, making it 2-1 in the 90+5 minute.
Less than a minute later, France were able to increase their lead again through Kylian Mbappe's second goal, which also sealed Les Bleus' victory with a score of 3-1.
