TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The publication of embargoed details about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Australian tour has raised serious concerns over media ethics and security, with sources saying the breach could have long-term implications for how the couple engages with the press.

According to a report by The Guardian, the Daily Mail published confidential briefing materials outlining the couple’s itinerary five days before their arrival in Melbourne, despite strict instructions that the information remain under embargo. The report included details of planned stops in Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra, along with background notes and a Q&A prepared for media use.

Sources close to the Duke and Duchess said the move “irreparably damaged” their ability to share advance information with journalists ahead of official visits. The Sussexes’ media office reportedly lodged a complaint, leading to the article being taken down.

As reported by The News International, the leaked materials—referred to as “operational notes”—revealed key elements of the couple’s movements, even though specific times were withheld. The disclosure nonetheless exposed sensitive logistical details that are typically kept confidential for security reasons.

A spokesperson for Meghan’s PR team criticized the publication and other outlets, saying, “This clear disregard for basic journalistic ethics has had a tangible impact on the visit, complicating and compromising security arrangements.” The statement also noted that other media organizations chose not to publish the information, while The Daily Mirror and Sky News Australia amplified the initial report.

What’s Going to Happen Now with Security Compromised

The breach forced last-minute changes to the couple’s itinerary and prompted increased security measures involving local police. Authorities in Victoria and New South Wales confirmed deploying additional resources to ensure safety, a move that drew criticism over the use of taxpayer funds.

Sources told The Guardian that the incident demonstrated that “the tradition of embargoed information is not respected by some media,” and warned it would have a “major impact” on how the couple handles press relations in the future. In response, the Sussexes’ team announced they would no longer share detailed itineraries beyond initial operational notes for the remainder of the tour.

Security concerns were further heightened by allegations that reporters followed the advance security team from the airport, potentially exposing sensitive movements. Officials emphasized that such actions could put both the couple and the public at risk.

Sky News Australia denied wrongdoing, stating it had not received embargoed information and had only reported details already in the public domain. The Daily Mail has not issued an official response.

The controversy also reflects the long-standing tension between the Sussexes and segments of the British media. During a recent legal case in London involving multiple public figures, Prince Harry accused the Daily Mail of attempting to drive him “to drugs and drinking” through persistent surveillance—claims denied by the publisher.

Despite the disruption, some unannounced engagements proceeded, including a surprise visit to Bondi Beach where the couple met survivors of a recent attack and emergency responders.

The incident underscores the delicate balance between media coverage and security, particularly for high-profile public figures, and highlights the risks posed when confidential information is prematurely disclosed.
