TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Airline ticket prices can be very fluctuating. The high or low prices can depend on many factors, including high demand at certain times. How can we get cheaper airline tickets?
Sophia Lin, Google's product management director for travel, said that ticket prices are constantly changing and updated across various data providers, even from second to second. "And every day, our system calculates a large number of possible ticket combinations for trips around the world," she said, as quoted in Travel + Leisure, September 9, 2025.
According to Google Flights data, a search engine that helps find and compare airline ticket prices from airlines and travel agents, the booking deadline for purchasing airline tickets is crucial to get the lowest price. Google recommends booking 39 days in advance for domestic flights and at least 49 days in advance for international flights to get the best prices.
This can also change depending on the destination. For trips to Europe, for example, it's usually cheaper 48 days or more before the departure schedule. For year-end holidays, Google recommends booking 35 days in advance for Thanksgiving and 51 days in advance for Christmas.
Departure Days
Google Flights also recommends the right departure days to get cheap tickets. Flying early in the week, Monday to Wednesday, will be much cheaper. Traveling on those days is about 13 percent more economical than flying on the weekend, according to the technology company.
Google states that booking transit tickets can also save an average of 22 percent compared to nonstop flights.
There is a lot of online advice stating that booking days are also important to get cheap tickets. However, James Byers, a product group manager for Google search, actually stated that it's not true. There is no day of the week that offers significantly cheaper prices for booking tickets.
"It should be noted that you won't save much by booking tickets on a specific day of the week," Byers said as quoted in Travel + Leisure.
Sunday is considered the most expensive day to book tickets, and Tuesday is technically the cheapest day, but the difference is only 1.3 percent.
Travelers can improve their ticket price saving skills by setting up price notifications to receive notifications if prices drop and using features in Google Flights such as viewing price history. "This makes it easier to find these offers and get a better idea of how prices are expected to change over time," Byers said.
This ticket booking recommendation is compiled after analyzing prices in 4,000 markets between 2021 and 2025 through Google Flights.
