TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Staff at Anuntaloko Parigi Hospital in Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, evacuated patients from the treatment room after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the regency on Tuesday.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the earthquake occurred on Tuesday at around 10:27 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) at a depth of 10 kilometers (km), approximately 42 kilometers southeast of Palu.
The BMKG also reported that the 6.7-magnitude earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, and local hospital authorities evacuated patients to avoid the risk of aftershocks.
As of 12:39 p.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time), patients remained in the hospital hallway, while local authorities had not yet issued instructions to return them to their inpatient units.
Indriyanti, a Parigi resident, said she was still staying outside to anticipate the risk of aftershocks.
"I don't dare go into the room yet. The earthquake was very strong," she said.
Panic was also evident at Samaritan Hospital in Palu, with patients, their families, and healthcare workers rushing out of the building to an open area as soon as the tremors were felt.
Several patients undergoing treatment were evacuated using wheelchairs or beds to anticipate the risk of aftershocks and the impact of the earthquake.
The hospital courtyard was filled with patients and visitors who remained outside until conditions were deemed safe.
"We ran outside because the tremors were so strong," said Salam, a resident of the hospital.
