Trump Declares Strait of Hormuz 'Completely Open' From Friday

4 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – U.S. President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz will be “completely open” from Friday, June 19, 2026, as Western leaders at the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains pushed to stabilize a fragile agreement with Iran that still faces major unresolved issues.

“The deal’s all signed. And the strait is already partially opened,” Trump said as he arrived in France for the summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, as quoted by The Guardian.

He added that the U.S. would publish the full terms of the agreement “in the very near future,” though only after a formal signing ceremony scheduled in Geneva on Friday.

Vice President JD Vance is expected to attend the signing on behalf of Washington, while Trump left open the possibility of his own attendance, saying, “I may be involved, I may not.”

Trump said sanctions relief for Iran would not be immediate. He told reporters that implementation would depend on Tehran’s compliance with the deal’s commitments, suggesting there would be no easing of sanctions until Iran meets its obligations.

The memorandum of understanding is expected to include provisions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, in exchange for easing U.S. restrictions on Iran. However, officials said full details of the agreement will only be released after the signing.

Trump also said he wanted to “see if we can straighten out Lebanon,” without elaborating, and suggested limited European involvement in securing maritime traffic in the region, according to DW.

On the possibility of a joint UK–France naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz, he said, “I don’t think we will need much help,” though he added that having “a ship or two” from other countries “is not a bad idea.”

French President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, reiterated France’s proposal for a naval mission alongside Britain to help secure shipping lanes.

“As the president said, maybe it won’t be desired, or maybe it won’t be needed, but in any case it is a measure that demonstrates our willingness to help,” Macron said.

Despite the announcement, uncertainty remains over key elements of the deal, including the fate of Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and the release of frozen assets. U.S. officials said any easing of sanctions would be tied strictly to Iran meeting its commitments, with no immediate release of frozen funds.

Technical negotiations led by Vice President Vance are expected to continue after the signing ceremony, as G7 leaders work to prevent the agreement from unravelling amid ongoing regional tensions.
