TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed no casualties reported after the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that hit the Palu, Central Sulawesi region on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. But results from BMKG and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) monitoring recorded a number of damages to physical infrastructure in the region.

"We have yet to receive any reports of fatalities thus far. We will update the information swiftly if that changes," said Teguh Rahayu, the Director of Seismology Engineering, Potential Geophysics, and Time Code at BMKG, during a press conference on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

The extent of damage as of 12:00 p.m. Jakarta time, according to Rahayu, includes moderate infrastructure damage in the Sigi Regency, Parigi Moutong Regency, and the city of Palu.

In Sigi, the Regent's office was reported to have been damaged, while at least five homes were destroyed in the earthquake.

A more extensive damage has been recorded in the city of Palu, including at the Santika Hotel, cafes, the Tadulako University Auditorium, the Best Western Hotel, and the Star Kitchen store.

"Up until 12:00 p.m., we received only moderate non-structural damage reports," said Teguh.

On the same occasion, BMKG's Deputy for Geophysics, Nelly Florida Riama, stated that the shallow earthquake with a 16-kilometer depth was categorized as shallow, caused by the activity at Sausu Fault.

The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that the earthquake had a downward movement mechanism or normal fault.

As of 12:00 p.m., as many as 20 aftershocks were reported, with the largest magnitude being 5.1. BMKG also confirmed that the tremor did not trigger a tsunami risk.

Nelly urges residents to remain calm and not easily influenced by unverified information. "Avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake and be cautious of ongoing aftershocks," said Nelly.
