TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that Indonesia will gradually enter the dry season in April this year, starting from the Nusa Tenggara regions.

BMKG chief Teuku Faisal Fathani said that a total of 114 out of 699 climatic zones in Indonesia will enter the dry season in April. Then, 184 climatic zones will experience it in May and 163 zones will see the dry season in June.

"From Nusa Tenggara regions, the [dry season] will move westward to other parts of Indonesia," said Faisal during a press conference at the BMKG Office in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, as quoted from Antara.

Regarding the duration of this year's dry season, Faisal mentioned 400 climatic zones will experience a longer dry season than usual. The peak of the dry season is divided into three, namely July, August, and September.

In July, several regions will see peak of dry season, including parts of Sumatra, central and northern parts of Kalimantan, small parts of Java, small parts of West and East Nusa Tenggara, the northern part of West Sulawesi, the western part of Central Sulawesi, the western part of North Sulawesi, small parts of Maluku, the central part of West Papua, and the eastern part of Papua.

The peak dry season will be in August for the central and southern parts of Sumatra, the central to eastern parts of Java, most of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali and Nusa Tenggara, some parts of Maluku, North Maluku, and Papua.

Meanwhile, in September, some parts of Lampung, some small parts of Java, most of East Nusa Tenggara, the northern and eastern parts of Sulawesi, most parts of North Maluku, some parts of Maluku, and some small parts of Papua, will see the peak of the dry season.

"It is predicted that in most parts of Indonesia, the dry season will start earlier, and last longer," said Faisal. "In simpler terms, 2026 is relatively drier than 2025."

BMKG's Deputy of Climatology, Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, detailed that 451 climatic zones will experience a relatively drier dry season. The weather agency advises residents in Aceh, most parts of South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, most parts of Bali and West Nusa Tenggara, most parts of Maluku, most parts of North Maluku, Papua Mountains, and South Papua, to remain cautious.
