TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Astronomical watchers may have another reason to look up this week as the northern lights could appear across parts of the United States from Thursday, March 5, through Friday, March 6.
The possibility follows a geomagnetic storm watch issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which warned that minor G1-class geomagnetic storms may develop, potentially pushing the aurora farther south than usual.
The heightened activity is linked to a negative polarity coronal hole high-speed stream, while the celestial alignment ahead of the March 20 spring equinox can make auroras nearly twice as likely in the weeks leading up to it.
According to the aurora view line from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the northern lights could be visible across as many as 10 U.S. states located close to the Canadian border.
10 areas across the United States with the strongest northern lights chances include:
- Alaska
- The northern portions of Washington
- Idaho
- Montana
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
- Minnesota
- Wisconsin
- Michigan
- Maine
Forbes added if geomagnetic activity intensifies into a G2-class storm, the display could stretch farther south, potentially allowing faint auroras to be spotted from northern regions of states such as Oregon, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
This time, viewing conditions may not be perfect, as a bright waning gibbous moon illuminated at about 92 percent is expected to rise a few hours after sunset across North America, potentially washing out fainter displays in the night sky.
For the clearest look, observers are advised to wait until the bright moon has set and seek dark areas away from city lights, as darker skies and an unobstructed northern horizon greatly improve the chances of seeing the colorful display.
