TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has agreed to form a police reform team, as he confirmed during a discussion with several figures from Gerakan Nurani Bangsa on Thursday, September 11, 2025.

Gomar Gultom, the former chair of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia, who took part in the meeting, said the group conveyed the necessity of evaluation and reform against the Indonesian National Police.

"Pak President will soon form a team or commission for police reform. I believe this is also in response to a substantial public demand," Gultom said after the three-hour meeting at the Presidential Palace yesterday, adding that Prabowo already has a concept for police reform.

The Gerakan Nurani Bangsa believes that the head of state must evaluate and rearrange the police's leadership and its policies. The goal is to prevent the police from engaging in excessive force that violates human rights and the constitutional rights of the citizens.

During yesterday's meeting, scholars and religious leaders from the Gerakan Nurani Bangsa also requested President Prabowo to release activists and students who are still detained by the police following the August demonstrations.

"We hope they can be released as soon as possible because fundamentally, they are our children, and they should not be in such a position," said Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, former Minister of Religious Affairs of Indonesia, who also participated in the meeting.

He argued that their detention would disrupt their education and could jeopardize their futures. Lukman noted that the students and activists were peacefully protesting, as is guaranteed by the constitution.

He suggested that the violence that erupted was likely not initiated by the protesters. "Many are unaware of what really happened. So, this is what we urge the government to promptly follow up on," Lukman stated.

The figures from Gerakan Nurani Bangsa also urged the President to form an independent investigative team to look into the demonstrations that ended in riots.

Gerakan Nurani Bangsa presented these demands during their meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace.

The delegation included: Sinta Nuriyah Abdurrahman Wahid, M. Quraish Shihab, Ahmad Mustofa Bisri, Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo, Omi Komariah Nurcholish Madjid, Frans Magnis-Suseno, Amin Abdullah, Bhikkhu Pannyavaro Mahathera, Alissa Q. Wahid, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, Karlina Rohima Supelli, Jacky Manuputty, Gomar Gultom, A. Setyo Wibowo, Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas, Eri Seda, Laode Moh. Syarif, Makarim Wibisono, Komaruddin Hidayat, and Slamet Rahardjo.
